   Dr. Pushpa Talwar Memorial Oration

1st Dr. Pushpa Talwar Memorial Oration was held on 06.02.2012 at PGI. Dr. Jacques F Meis, Senior Consultant from Canisius Wilhelmina Hospital, Nijmegen, The Netherlands delivered the oration. Dr. Meera Sharma, Prof. and Head, Department of Medical Microbiology spoke on Dr. Pushpa Talwar, the Ex-Head of PGI and her contribution in whose name the oration is instituted. She initiated the development of medical mycology discipline at PGI, which is now turned into National Reference Laboratory for fungal diseases. Prof. Arunaloke Chakrabarti introduced Dr. Jacques F. Meis and his contribution in the medical mycology. Dr. Meis is the President, European Confederation on Medical Mycology. He delivered the oration in front of the packed audience on the topic: ‘Mycology – a new kid on the block in medical microbiology’. He highlighted the importance of invasive fungal infections in tertiary care centers, especially in immunocompromised patients. He stressed on the need of early diagnosis of fungal infections and early therapy. He told that the clinicians should be careful while treating transplant patients, as 100% tea and pepper samples showed presence of Aspergillus fumigatus, which is dreadful fungus for those compromised patients. He informed that drug resistance in A. fumigatus is increasing. Much is linked with the increased use of fungicide in agriculture. There is need of increased awareness, good diagnostic mycology laboratories, and research in the field of medical mycology. Prof. Y Chawla, the Director, PGI conferred Dr. Meis with the oration award. Dr. Amod Gupta, Dean, PGI proposed the vote of thanks.
