Prof. Yogesh Chawla, Director, PGIMER unfurled the national flag at PGIMER
and celebrated the Republic Day along with the faculty, nursing,
administrative and other staff. While addressing the audience Prof. Chawla
said, “Due to the foresight of our first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal
Nehru our main hospital was inaugurated on 7th July, 1963. Today its only
due to the hard work and perseverance of founders like Dr. Tulsi Dass, Dr.
S.S. Anand and DR. P.N. Chuttani that PGI will be able to celebrate 2012
as Golden Jubilee Year.” He paid rich tributes to the freedom fighters
Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh and innumerable
martyrs.
While praising the faculty for their achievements Prof. Chawla informed
that 8 new courses had been introduced in the July session of 2011. These
are DM Cardiac Anaesthesia, DM Clinical Haematology, DM Haemato-Pathology,
DM Paediatric Neurology, MDS Oral & Maxilofacial Surgery, M.Sc. (MLT)
Transfusion Medicine, M.Sc. Respiratory Care and PG Diploma in Public
Health Management. He further informed that Biometric Fingerprinting to
identify candidates had been used for all the entrance examinations.

While expressing his happiness to be amongst the PGI family comprising
resident doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and others, he informed that
in the last six months about 64 employees of different sections had been
recruited, 81 promoted, 48 confirmed, 108 had been given financial
upgradation under ACP scheme and 383 under MACP scheme. He also
appreciated the engineering wing and said residential houses in Sector 24
were being repaired and the work for Sector 12 houses was in the
pipeline. Under the 11th Five Year Plan modernization of the Research
Blocks and the Nehru Hospital to add another 250 bedded block, Rs. 515
crore for the planned budget and another Rs. 370 crore for the OBC
Expansion Scheme had been sanctioned.
Prof. Chawla thanked the media, NGOs-Lifeline, Sahayata, Rotary Club and
the philanthropists of Chandigarh and surrounding areas for contributing
generously for the poor patients of PGI. Patriotic songs were sung by the
Nursing staff and sweets were distributed amongst the employees.
All the senior officers of the Institute attended the Republic Day
