Retinoblastoma Awareness Day
The Retinoblastoma Clinic of the department of ophthalmology organized the
Retinoblastoma Awareness Day on 12th of May 2012. Retinoblastoma is an
rare eye cancer of childhood. This is a part particiaption of the world
retinoblastoma awareness which is being held world over from 13-19th May.
Dr Usha Singh and her colleagues who run the retinoblastoma clinic invited
retinoblastoma patients and parents to attend this awareness campaign.
The programme was held in the Advanced Eye Center auditorium. Prof Amod
gupta inaugurated the programme with his inaugural address. He emphasized
that there should be a way of diagnosing retinoblastoma before the
white reflex is seen. And that eyes of everychild should be examined
right from earlys years. The purpose of this as to create awareness
about white relex which is the most common symptom of retinoblastoma in
children. Talks were held in simple hindi to explain how white reflex
looks, when can it be seen and what to do when seen by the oncology team
comprising of ophthalmologist, paediatric oncologist and radiation
oncologist. This programme was attended ny Senoir drs like Dr SC Sharma,
hod radiotherapy, Dr Deepak bansal, paediatric oncologist, Dr Amit Bahl
radiation oncologist , senior ophthalmologist Dr Bhajan Singh , Senior
citizen Wing Cdr Pritpal Singh Sandhu, NGO members of Cancer Sahayta
sahyog, all department faculty and all interested workers. Use of
multimedia, simple diagrams and videos were used. It was stressed upon
that early detection is the key to saving life and sight. In addition to
that, benefits from the govt and non govt organizatins were explained to
them
Key message was that parents should get the eyes of the children checked
by an eye specialist whenever they see white reflex, sudden onset of
squint or development of large eye. Families where retinoblastoma runs
in the members should get the eyes of children checked right from birth
onwards for early detection.
Alpana Bakshi mother of a retinoblastoma child Rijul Bakshi spoke how the
family should not abandon such a child and support the children in all
times of treatment and thereafter. Such children once cured can lead a
normal life and achive their full potential. Her son today who has no
sight is an example of that. He is 18 yrs old now and doing computer
science and is already an accomplished national level singer with many
awards and medals to his credit.
Documentary of Rijuls career was shown to inspire the other children and
parents. Distribution of gifts were given by all senior invitees to all
children. Distribution of Flyers containing key message was given to all
parents and requested to spread the message among all family and
friends. Take home message was once again repeated and parents were
suggested to form retinoblastoma support group for the poor and needy
patients.
