World Health Day
World Health Day was celebrated on 7th April, 2012 at auditorium of
‘Advanced Paediatric Centre’, PGIMER, Chandigarh. Dr. N. K. Ganguly,
President, Jawahar Lal Nehru Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education
and Research (JIPMER) Puduchery was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Dr
Sahdhya Ghai Principal, ‘.National Institute of Nursing Education’ (NINE)
Chandigarh welcomed the chief guest and audience. Dr Arun Aggarwal
introduced the theme "Good health adds life to years". He told that for
adding life to the years, we need to interact with elderly and improve
physical activity. Dr Yogesh Chawla, director, PGIMER, told that it is
our social duty to provide an environment which ensures that elderly can
lead a healthy, productive and respectful life. He informed that PGI is
always keen to provide an elderly- friendly environment. By providing them
facilities such as provision of ramps, separate queues for elderly,
increased number of wheel chairs, and internal transport vehicles. A
geriatric clinic is also run in PGI. Dr Kamaljit Singh, WHO
representative described the Global & Regional Initiatives by WHO. He
focused on promoting active aging for a healthy and productive life as the
elderly people are a valuable asset for their families and society.

Dr
N.K Ganguly the chief guest expressed his concern related to economic and
social disparity that makes the elderly population more vulnerable to the
problems related to age. As the number of aged-friendly hospital is not
sufficient, there is a need to develop ‘elderly care centres that are
homely and fully equipped to cater to the medical needs of the elderly. He
enforced that community element need to be strengthened so that elderly
can lead a dignified life with quality. He urged social scientists to come
forward to find the ways. Dr. Madhu Gupta assistant Prof. from School of
Public Health PGI introduced about demographic transition which is the
shift in a population from an old demographic situation marked by high
fertility and mortality to a modern demographic situation with low
fertility and mortality, as result we have more number of elderly now to
cater to and this number will increase many fold by 2050. She described
that developing countries are facing dual burden of infectious disease
along with chronic and degenerative diseases. Prof. Savita Kumari from
department of internal medicine discussed the medical problems of elderly
and their management. Dr. Adarsh Kohli from the psychiatric department
discussed the psychological problems of elderly and suggested the methods
to overcome these.

Dr
Arun Aggarwal introduced the National Program for the Health Care of
Elderly. He provided information about the services being provided at
different levels of health services. He enforced that only government
policies cannot meet the real challenge but participation from social
organisations and community level is very necessary. Role of AYUSH in
Management of Elderly Problems was discussed by Dr. Rajiv Kapila, a senior
physician in Ayurvedic. He introduced that Ayurveda aims at Sudh Ahara
(pure and balanced diet) Sudh Vihara (healthy life style) to keeping a
person healthy. He also mentioned the challenges in the care of geriatric
population and put a light on Ayurvedic remedies of health problems of
elderly. Dr. Vikas Suri introduced about the needs of vaccine in elderly.
After that, there was a panel discussion where the experts answered the
questioned raised by the audience.
