Department Introduction

The department of virology provides lab services to various departments of PGI and is involved in research work. Department of Virology has been identified as the “Apex referral laboratory for advanced diagnosis of dengue, JE , chikungunya and other arboviral infections”, under National Vector Borne Disease Control Programm, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. At present, there are 29 tests being approved for routine viral diagnosis done by the department.  There are three labs in the department namely viral serology, Arboviruses lab, Tissue culture.  Besides, department has labs related to research like molecular virology lab, DNA/RNA lab and central instrumentation lab etc., in which patient related tests are done.  Samples for testing are also received from other government institutions as referral services sporadically or during epidemics.
