Department Introduction
The
Department of Radiotherapy started functioning
independently in 1971
and has been upgraded into Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) under
National Cancer Control Programme by
Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India in March, 2005. The
department provide facilities for radiation therapy, chemotherapy(medical
oncology) for treatment of cancer and palliative care for management of
terminally ill cancer patients. The department has always strived to
introduce latest and newer techniques of radiation from time to time. The
department is one of the best equipped radiotherapy department in the
country, which has facilities and equipment for providing not only
conventional radiotherapy, but latest techniques like 3-D CRT and IMRT. The
brachytherapy facilities are one of the best in the department and practice
all types of brachytherapy techniques including HDR brachytherapy for all
types of cancers. The department also practices all types of chemotherapy
particularly for solid cancers. The department also provides palliative
treatment of terminally ill cancer patients through palliative care clinic
in the department, home care service to the tricity and Hospice in Sector 43
for those patients, who cannot be managed at home.
The
department has teaching courses to produce trained manpower in
radiotherapy. The department runs MD course for radiation oncologists,
B.Sc. and M.Sc. courses for training of technical staff and M.Sc. course in
Medical Physics in collaboration with Panjab University for producing medical
physicists for the country. The department is also involved in research on
various aspects of cancer and its management. The research work done by the
department in the area of cancer cervix, cancer esophagus and lung and
cancer breast is well known, not only in the country but in the
international sphere also.
