Department Introduction

The department of Plastic Surgery at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research was established in May 1966 by Professor C. Balakrishnan who joined the Institute after resigning from the post of Professor of the first Upgraded Department and All India training center for Plastic Surgery at Nagpur .He  was  joined by  Dr. C.P. Sawhney as Senior Lecturer who had training in Plastic Surgery at Patiala with Professor R.L. Machnanda and also benefited there by the visit of Sir Benjamin Rank who helped in founding the department of Plastic Surgery at the Rajindra Hospital. Initially, the department had only two consultants, one registrar and one house surgeon.  The unit had 24 beds plus four beds for cleft lip and palate babies who were cared for in a separate room.  The first M.Ch. trainee, Dr.S. Baliarsingh, was selected in January 1967 as Registrar cum trainee for the two years course. Later, in 1973 Dr. S. Baliarsingh was appointed Assistant Professor and Dr. P.S. Chari as Lecturer.  In 1976 Dr. Baliarsingh left to join the Indian Railways and Dr.(Mrs) S. Mitra was selected as Lecturer. Prof. C. Balakrishnan retired in April 1980 and Dr. C.P.Sawhney became the Professor of Plastic Surgery.  Dr. A.K. Govila joined the department as Assistant Professor in December 1983.  He left to take up a post in Abu Dhabi in March 1993.  Dr. R.K. Sharma joined the department as Assistant Professor in 1987.  Dr. G. Biswas joined the department in 1993 as Assistant Professor. At present the faculty consists of two Professors, one Associate Professor and  two Assistant Professors.

Starting with two Registrars cum M.Ch trainees (including one for burns) in 1967 the department now has ten posts of Senior Residents for training of whom four are for sponsored candidates

At present,  the unit has 51 beds plus four beds in the Emergency Ward for burns and trauma patients.    Emergency ward patients are expected to be either discharged for follow up care or be transferred to the general wards within 72 hours.  A separate suite of operating rooms is attached to the Emergency Wing.
