Department Introduction The Department of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery started in December 1961 with Late Prof Y N Mehra as the first faculty member. Dr MML Arora joined as the second faculty member in 1962. Dr SC Pandhi joined as an Assistant Professor in 1972. Prof SBS Mann succeeded Prof Y N Mehra in 1991 as the Head of the department. The Department of Otolaryngology at PGI strives to provide highest standards of health care to the patients. The faculty, resident and the support staff are committed to provide a variety of services and treatment for diseases of the Ear, Nose, Throat and Head and Neck. The department provides services to the patients in the following sub-specialties: - Otology/Neuro-otology - Audiology - Head and Neck Cancer Surgery - Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology - Rhinology - General Otorhinoloaryngology The department is one of the leading ENT departments of the country. It is well equipped with all the latest equipment like microscopes, powered instrumentation, video endoscopes, laser and speech lab. Cochlear Implantation at PGI Chandigarh Department of Otolaryngology at PGI is committed to provide high quality cochlear implant program for children and adults with profound sensori neural hearing loss. Implantation is conducted with the modern surgical facilities. Post implant rehabilitation is conducted in the Speech and Audiology Wing in the new ENT OPD Complex. The department started the cochlear implant programme in 2003 and has performed about 50 implants since then. The department has a well equipped speech and audiology wing with state of the art facilities for audiometry, tympanometry, BERA & rehabilitative services for cochlear implant patients. The speech therapists also take active care of patients suffering from speech and language disorders. The section of Audiology offers services for hearing loss, deafness and vertigo including hearing and balance evaluation and hearing aid evaluation. The Vestibular Function Lab is well equipped with facilities to perform caloric tests and electronystagmography and canalith reposition procedures. The department also has a temporal bone laboratory with 3 stations . The trainee residents are trained to have hands on experience in performing temporal bone surgery. Pioneering work on Traumatic optic neuropathy and optic nerve fenestration for BIH is being done. The department is constantly expanding and plans to acquire Image Guided Surgery System and also establishment of advanced head and neck cancer centre are in the pipeline.
