PROFILE

The Department of clinical neurosciences was established in 1962 under the able leadership of the Late Dr. D.R. Gulati. The medical and surgical departments were formally separated in 1979 . In 24 years of independent existence, the department of neurology has shown tremendous growth. It owes gratitude to the eminent teachers such as Dr. O.N. Markand, Dr. Vimla Virmani, Dr. Baldev Singh, Dr. Anand Prakash, Dr. J.S. Chopra and Prof. S. Prabhakar for laying down the foundations of a vibrant department that has recently been ranked among the top five Departments in the country.

The Department provides specialized neurological care to the northern states of India including Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, with patients coming from as far as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttaranchal. The enormous increase in workload can be gauged from the increase in the number of patients attending the OPD services from 7692 in 1972 to more than 23,000 in 2003. Quantity, however, has not compromised quality and the department prides itself on the quality care provided to its patients. Apart from the OPD and inpatient services, the department provides 24 hours emergency services and round the clock consultation services. Over 5000 consultations were attended to in the past one year alone.

The neurophysiological laboratories were established in 1984, with the provision of EMG, NCV, evoked potential and EEG studies. State of art machines have been added to the repertoire of the available services . The department now boasts of a fully equipped video EEG laboratory and is able to provide EMG, NCV and Doppler studies on an OPD and emergency basis. A good coordination with the neuro-radiological services ensures that the latest modalities including SPECT, MRA, CTA, diffusion and perfusion MRI are available for its patients.

In keeping with the progressive outlook of the department, great strides have been made in various fields in the past couple of years . A "Brain attack" program was started, which includes a public awareness programme, a 24 hour helpline and ambulance services for acute stroke patients with a dedicated thrombolysis programme is now underway. In the part 2 years alone, with the cooperation of Neuroradiological services, the department has been able to perform the maximum number of thrombolysis in acute ischaemic stroke in India and has achieved very encouraging results. With the coordinated efforts of Neuroradiologists, vascular and neurosurgeons, the department has been able to spearhead an effective intervention program including carotid stenting and aneurysmal coiling.

To honor the resolution to "bring epilepsy out of the shadows " a comprehensive epilepsy care program has been started under which patients with medically refractory epilepsy are followed up in the refractory epilepsy clinic. The department is now able to offer epilepsy surgery as a treatment option to an appropriately selected group of patients. Candidates for epilepsy surgery are evaluated using long term video EEG recordings and epilepsy surgery is being performed in cooperation with the neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, neuropsychologists and other allied specialists.

In the field of movement disorders, patients of focal dystonia and post-stroke spasticity benefit from botulinum toxin injection at the movement disorder clinic. In addition, intrathecal baclofen pump therapy and stereotactic biopsy have been provided to many patients and provision of DBS is planned in the near future.
