Department Introduction
Even before our institute was given the mandate to act as a “National Medical Institute” by Government of India, a unique department of Experimental Medicine was created in the year 1963 for providing advanced multidisciplinary research to address the challenging issues posed by the modern medicine. For the last four and a half decades, the department has proved its excellence at both national and international level in teaching as well as research directed to understand the molecular basis of several diseases especially cardiovascular diseases, leukemia, diarrhoeal diseases, tuberculosis and AIDS etc. In the year 1983, the department acquired the expertise in the area of “Molecular Biology” recognized widely as the heart of modern medicine. The establishment of molecular biology unit within the department by the present HOD was instrumental in starting teaching programmes in the field of medical biotechnology. Consequently, the name of the department was upgraded to the “Department of Experimental Medicine and Biotechnology”. After being equipped with “Biotechnology Armour” the department attained expertise in the following sub specialties of human genomics such as Functional Genomics/RNomics, Genetic polymorphism and Mutation Detection, Genetic engineering, Nutrigenomics and Glycoproteomics. Recently, a state of art small animal facility, with a provision to develop gene knockout and transgenic animal model systems for various human diseases is being added to the department. This facility will be a shot in the arm to initiate experimental pathophysiological work.
