Department Introduction
Cytology services at PGI had a
humble start under the able support and guidance of the late Prof. B.K.
Aikat, the dynamic Founder-Director, Professor and Head of Pathology at this
Institute. His wife and our ‘Mentor’ in Cytology the late Prof. Meera Aikat
took over the charge of developing this specialty and was appointed its
Head, which started as a division and then was given the full fledged status
of a department.

Introduced FNAC as a routine diagnostic
procedure in 1973 (Pioneer centre in the country)

Given the status of the Department of Cytology
& Gynaec pathology in 1978. Gynaec Histopathology remains a part of
this department.

Pathology training programme

Only centre providing M.Sc. MLT cytology
training course for technicians holding B.Sc MLT degree (duration two
years)

specialization certificate course in Cytology.
At the national level, the
department has actively contributed to the cause of the Indian Academy of
cytologists by serving on its executive and scientific contributions in
symposiums, CMEs and invited guest lectures.
