Inauguration of Golden Jubilee
Celebrations of PGIMER
7th July, 2012

Golden
Jubilee celebrations were inaugurated at the PGIMER in the august presence of
Shri Pawan Kumar Bansal, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources
and Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission of Govt.
of India.
Shri
Montek Singh Ahluwalia appreciated the contribution of the Institute and said it
had a high reputation in the country and an international standing. As an
economist, while talking about the economics of health sector he said,
"Substantial government funding is needed in the 12th Five Year Plan to serve
the difficulties which are being faced, with only 4% of the total expenditure
being done for this sector. Both the Central and State Governments need to
spend much more on health and also expand on health education. Many more
medical institutes are the need of the hour as human resource in health care is
the key issue." Shri Ahluwalia emphasized on public and preventive health to
reduce the burden of disease and said that taking care of non-communicable
diseases was the need of the hour. Shri Pawan Kumar Bansal remarked that he had
seen PGI grow from strength to strength and despite the pressures, the attitude
had always been to serve the humanity with compassion. PGI had always been,
according to him, a boon for the city. Not only PGI but even the citizens of
the city needed to celebrate the golden jubilee, he commented.
Shri
Gulam Nabi Azad, Hon'ble Union Health Minister could not attend the function due
to his getting indisposed. But in his message he said, "I am sure that in
times to come, PGIMER would become a leader in promoting a broad understanding
of health through trans-disciplinary education and an integrated approach toward
multi-sector applications of cost effective public health solutions. On behalf
of the Ministry, I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate our
commitment to this great, national institution of excellence. We will
continue to provide all support necessary in the Institute's pursuit of
excellence and hope that the high quality work being done at the Institute will
flourish, helping the nation to attain social equity through the goal of 'health
for all'."
