Marrow Transplant Centre
Hon'ble Minister of State Sh. Kapil Sibal inaugurated the bone marrow
transplant centre of PGIMER, Chandigarh. The department of Internal Medicine
was given the task of establishing the bone marrow transplant centre under
the 9th plan that was extended to the 10th plan period. In PGI,
approximately 1000-1500 new patients and 6000-7000 follow up patients of
hematological disorders are seen in adult and pediatric hematoncology clinic
every year and this number is constantly increasing each year. The
department of Internal medicine started the Hematology/Leukemia clinic in
mid seventies.
The participating departments in the transplant program are Internal
Medicine, Pediatrics hemat-oncology, Radiotherapy and Transfusion Medicine.
The basic departments are Haematology, Immunopathology, Microbiology and
Virology.
Four autologous stem cell transplants in multiple myeloma (a type of
blood cancer involving bones) in past 2 years. The centre gets
patients from states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu &
Kashmir,
Uttar Pradesh, Uttranchal, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orrisa, West Bengal,
Sikkim, Manipur and start of this facility at PGI would benefit the patients
coming from these states. The bone marrow transplant centre at PGI is
a 4 Bedded Transplant Centre with 6 step down beds. The Initial plan
is to do autologous stem cell transplant and allogeneic transplants would be
started by the end of this year. The approximate cost of autologus
bone marrow transplant for an adult patient is 3 lacs while the estimated
cost of allogeneic transplant would be 5 lacs. |
